Biography
“Navigating the complex and intimidating healthcare legal world can be very frustrating particularly to health care organizations that need to be able to rely on timely expert legal advice.”
With thirty years of experience, including acting as Regional Chair of the Ontario Consent and Capacity Board and as counsel to various health care institutions, Julie has both an understanding of her clients’ needs as well as the decision-making process of Boards, Tribunals and Courts.
Julie regularly appears before the Ontario Review Board, the Ontario Consent and Capacity Board, and various levels of Courts on legal issues relating to mental health and healthcare consent. She is a recipient of the Best Lawyer award for 2025.
As the law evolves with respect to mental health, consent and capacity, criminal responsibility, and many other issues relating to health care, it is important for health care organizations to know that they can contact Julie or the firm and receive immediate legal assistance with the knowledge that they are dealing with experts in the field.
Julie has written An Introduction to the Law Governing Physicians (three editions) and contributed to A Practical Guide to Mental Health, Capacity and Consent Law of Ontario (second edition). Additionally, Julie has provided educational seminars in health-focused organizations and instruction at the University of Western Ontario Schulich School of Medicine and Fanshawe College.
Over the years Julie has volunteered for a wide variety of community groups particularly in the health care field including:
